Laurel Premo makes it all look so easy: there is a sense of stillness even as her hands work furiously on a guitar or a clawhammer banjo; her head barely moves as she sings high lonesome melodies. Alone or in the roots duo Red Tail Ring, Laurel produces haunting music that is dignified without being overly serious, scholarly without being dusty, and above all alive with emotion.
